Project: Masquerade Films/Benard+Pearson loft Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Description: loft addition to a 1000 sq. ft. live/work studio The Masquerade Films project involved the design and fabrication of a translucent cast resin floor for the loft of a live/work studio space in Vancouver, Canada. The client’s desire to retain the vertical openness of an industrial studio space prompted research and experimentation into the application of industrial resin as a building material. The floor provides a heightened sense of connection without sacrificing visual privacy between the video editing space below and the sleeping loft above. While it took the clients some time to get used to walking on a translucent floor ten feet above the ground, both have warmed to the project, likening the experience to “living in a really big beer bottle”. The floor was cast out of standard, industrial resin in 12” by
24” tiles, each a 1/4” thick. The resin was allowed to cure
in a closed mold that allowed the excessive catalytic heat to ‘burn’
the tiles a rich, amber hue. |
