SOffice™ is a prototype environment developed in response to a competition brief from the Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri of the Government of Italy. SOffice™ was selected as the winning design for the public interface with the future bureaucratic ‘front’ office. It is a cure for wherever the public endures long lineups and uninspired service. SOffice™ is a synthesis of mutable architectural systems, new technologies and human factors research. The design is a new architectural prototype capable of adapting to a wide range of existing environments. It employs a strategic combination of new and existing technologies to enable fluid, secure, transactions and communication. The design services the larger goals and attributes of the customer experience. It provides the citizen / customer with a never-before-seen EXPERIENCE of government/corporation; one of accessibility, flexibility, mutability, responsibility and openness.

These days, many bureaucratic transactions can be avoided using technology. Our design recognizes the need to go beyondproblem solving and to build an environment around the reasons why people still gather in physical places. We coupled this LOGIC with an "extra" experience that reorients perception of the bureaucracy to exceed the expectations of the user. This "Ideal Office" of the future will holistically synthesize this experience while increasing efficiency of service. The relationship between the customer and the worker, who is a part of a larger learning organization, creates a shared space of collaboration. The line-up is reinvented to liberate the customer and allow them to organize their time productively. The spatial organization and programmatic sequence eliminate the single, linear sequence in favor of the efficiency of a matrix. The architecture combines with the signage program to establish an intuitive information delivery system. Finally technology is a servant that allows new relationship patterns to emerge seamlessly. Mass customization of the environment for each customer provides speed, ease of use, and communicates the core attributes of the host.
